Systematics Section Franck, Alan [1]. Relationships among subg. Harrisia (Cactaceae) in the Caribbean. Delimiting species and ascertaining species phylogenies using molecular approaches in closely-related plant taxa has not been straightforward. Particularly in Cactaceae, molecular approaches have not been tested for species-level phylogenies. Subgenus Harrisia, endemic to the Caribbean, has approximately 11 named species distributed across the Greater Antilles, the Bahama Islands, and Florida. Morphological characterization is lacking; reproductive structures are rare and of poor quality in herbarium specimens. DNA sequencing of plastid loci (numerous), nuclear ribosomal loci (ITS, 5S-NTS), and low-copy nuclear loci (isi1, nhx1, pepC) has provided limited resolution. Amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) are a much more powerful and sensitive tool that are being explored for the phylogeny of subg. Harrisia. Broader Impacts:
