Systematics Section De Groot, Sarah [1]. Vegetative plasticity in Eriastrum diffusum and E. eremicum at a single site in the Mojave Desert, California. The growth form of many annual plants tends to vary from year to year, depending on factors such as precipitation and temperature. Plant architecture also varies with ecological factors such as substrate, soil type, or competition. This study compared the architecture, leaf morphology, and corolla morphology for two species of Eriastrum, at a site in the Mojave Desert of California where plants each species were found both in a dry wash and on the gentle slopes above it. Habitat type (slope vs. wash) accounted for about one-third of the variation in architecture within both species, and architecture was significantly different between slope and wash plants. Leaf morphology was not different for E. diffusum, but was for E. eremicum. Corolla morphology was not significantly different between habitat types for either species. This analysis supports the view that floral morphology is more conserved than vegetative morphology, which is more strongly affected by environmental and ecological factors. Broader Impacts:
