Biogeography

Diaz, Amalia [1], Gonzalez, Favio [2].

Phylogeny of high Andean species of Eriocaulaceae (Poales) based on morphology, and implications on their biogeography.

The pantropical family Eriocaulaceae is highly diversified in South America, especially in the Guayana shield, the ´Campos de altitude´ of Brazil and the Páramos of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. The páramos are younger than the ´Campos de altitude´ and the Guayana shield; however, they possess a very rich flora with many endemic species. Using morphological data, we performed a phylogenetic analysis of the high Andean species of Eriocaulaceae in order to elucidate some of the events that gave rise to them. The single MPT obtained suggests that there were several independent events of colonization to the high Andean environments, as well as a major speciation event in the clade corresponding to subgen. Platycaulon Mart., leading to the páramo species of this subgenus. In addition, the analysis suggests that there was a long distance dispersal event from South America to Central and North America through the Isthmus of Panama, giving rise to the North American members of Eriocaulaceae.
