Further adventures in the phylogenetics of Boechereae (Brassicaceae).

Tribe Boechereae includes the genera Anelsonia, Boechera, Borodinia, Cusickiella, Nevada, Phoenicaulis, Polyctenium, and Sandbergia. Boechera includes ca. 110 species, while the remaining genera include one or two species each. Boechereae is closely related to the tribes Halimolobeae and Camelineae; the latter includes Arabidopsis thaliana. Due to this close relationship to Arabidopsis combined with its much greater diversity, Boechera has become a model genus for a diverse array of studies. In an ongoing effort to clarify the taxonomy of the group, we present phylogenetic analyses of Boechereae, including all genera of the tribe and most of the sexual diploid species of Boechera. Nine independent loci are used, including two chloroplast regions, nrDNA ITS, and seven low-copy nuclear loci. Taxon and locus sampling is much more complete than previous datasets. These phylogenetic results address the intergeneric relationships within the tribe, monophyly of Boechera, and resolution of major groups within Boechera. Sandbergia is sister to the remaining Boechereae and Boechera is found to be polyphyletic, comprising three groups: 1) a group of five eastern North American Boechera (including B. laevigata & B. canadensis) plus the Asian Borodinia; 2) Boechera repanda; 3) the main bulk of Boechera, comprising the remaining 100+, primarily western North American species. Several clades within the western North American group are identified.
