Systematics Section Morawetz, Jeffery J. [1], Randle, Christopher P. [2]. The five lost tribes of Orobanchaceae: New insights on family classification from the tropical lineage. Orobanchaceae is a diverse family of 2000+ species spanning the range of nutritional modes from nonparasites and facultative hemiparasites to obligate holoparasites. While temperate taxa are well studied, tropical members are poorly known in comparison. There is strong support for a single tropical lineage containing a diversity of growth forms (herbs, shrubs, vines) and fruit types (capsules, berries, drupes). This lineage contains the 5 “lost tribes” of the family, infrafamilial taxa that have been poorly diagnosed, three of which lack formal nomenclative recognition. Here we present results from newly included taxa that challenge previous hypotheses of relationships among and within these tribes, and argue for the recognition of another tropical tribe corresponding to an obscure name for a lineage of primarily holoparasitic taxa.
