A study of the phylogenetic relationships among species of Lyonia occurring in the Caribbean using ITS and matK sequences; with comments on biogeographical relationships. Lyonia is a clade of Ericaceae related to Pieris, Agarista and Craibiodendron (Lyonieae). Most of the 36 species of Lyonia occur in the Greater Antilles and some occur in eastern US and in eastern Asia. This study investigates the evolutionary relationships of several species of Lyonia from both Cuba and Hispaniola to address their relationships in the context of their geographic distribution. We used one nuclear region (ITS) and one chloroplast region (matK) to address the relationships among the sampled species. Seventeen species were sampled including 5 endemic to Cuba and 6 endemic to Hispaniola. Three species of Lyonia from the southeastern US and one species from China were also included in the study. The group was rooted with Pieris phillyreifolia. We aligned the data with MAFFT and used the maximum likelihood software RAxML to construct phylogenetic trees. Analysis of each data set was performed separately and because there was no conflict between the resulting trees, the data were combined and analyzed in a single matrix. Results suggest a complex history for Lyonia in the Caribbean. Most of the species from Hispaniola form a clade, but species from Cuba are not closely related to each other. Broader Impacts:
