Colloquia: Systematic and Evolutionary Perspectives on Apomixis Noyes, Richard David [1]. Apomictic conundrums: phylogenetic tales and trait evolution. Inferring the number of origins of apomixis may be problematic because it is difficult to distinguish between do novo origins and the spread of apomixis genes by introgressive hybridization. Erigeron sect. Phalacroloma (E. annuus, E. strigosus, and E. tenuis) includes diverse sexual diploid (2n = 18) populations in the southeastern United States and widespread triploid and tetraploid apomicts. Sequence data for rDNA (ITS & ETS) yield well resolved phylogenies but indicate reticulation among sexual diploid populations. Furthermore, apomicts exhibit a diversity of combinations of rDNA haplotypes found in sexual diploids. Determining if apomixis in E. sect. Phalacroloma has evolved once and spread infectiously by introgressive hybridization, or has evolved independently multiple times, will require knowledge of the gene regions linked to apomixis and studies of the mechanics of hybridization in apomictic complexes.
