Systematics Section Hansen, Debra R. [1], Jansen, Robert K. [1], Sage, Rowan F. [2], Simpson, Beryl [3]. Phylogenies of Pectis and Porophyllum (Asteraceae, Tageteae) inferred from ITS and chloroplast sequence data. Pectis is a genus of ~85 species of xeric-adapted annuals and herbaceous perennials which occur in arid habitats from Wyoming south to Argentina. The center of diversity for the genus lies in Mexico, home to ~54 species. The last comprehensive treatment of Pectis, done over 100 years ago, included only 34 species, thus nearly two-thirds remain unassigned to section, and we have little understanding of infrageneric relationships. Species of the genus are also known to utilize C4 photosynthesis, which is uncommon in the family. It has been assumed that Pectis is a C4 genus and Porophyllum (~30 ssp, its proposed closest relative), is a C3 genus, but of their combined ~115 species, only 32 have been surveyed for photosynthetic pathway. To date we have gathered new photosynthetic pathway data from 77 species. Here we present the phylogenies of Pectis and Porophyllum based on nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS) and chloroplast sequence data, and examine the photosynthetic data in light of the phylogenies.
