Systematics Section Mora, M. Marcela [1], Clark, John L. [1]. A molecular phylogenetic evaluation of the polyphyletic genus Paradrymonia (Gesneriaceae). Paradrymonia (Gesneriaceae) is a genus of facultative epiphytic herbs with 38 currently recognized species. It occurs throughout the neotropics except SE Brazil and the Caribbean with centers of diversity in Colombia and Ecuador. Species relationships within this genus were assessed using molecular data generated from the nuclear ribosomal internal and external transcribed spacer regions (ITS and ETS), and the chloroplast trnH-psbA intergenic spacer region. Analyses utilizing parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference methods were used to assess phylogenetic relationships among 22 species of Paradrymonia and several other species from other genera within the tribe Episcieae. A preliminary analysis strongly supports that Paradrymonia, as currently circumscribed, is polyphyletic and includes taxa in two different clades. A strongly supported clade containing the type species of Paradrymonia includes Chrysothemis pulchella and C. friedrieshthaliana and ten species of Nautilocalyx. Another clade including Paradrymonia longifolia and P. anisophylla nest within a paraphyletic Drymonia. We suggest the necessity of studying underexplored morphological characters such as bearded anthers, rosette habit, and corolla tube angulation to recognize new generic boundaries in the Episciae.
