Intraspecific Variation in the Floral Scent of Oenothera cespitosa: Exploring the potential for chemotypes.

We examined floral volatile composition in the night-blooming, hawkmoth-pollinated Oenothera cespitosa subsp. navajoensis and subsp. cespitosa. We used a "zNOSE" fast GC and Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) followed by GC-MS to verify repeatability of scent profiles within individuals in a common garden. Each flower is representative of the core scent phenotype of the individual. In the field, we analyzed populations of O. cespitosa subsp. navajoensis near Moab, UT and O. cespitosa subsp. cespitosa near Jackson Hole, WY using zNOSE and Dynamic Headspace Sampling followed by GC-MS. These subspecies exhibit intrapopulation variation suggestive of discrete phenotypes.
