Systematics Section Zúñiga, José D. [1]. Preliminary studies in Meliosma (Sabiaceae): insight from molecular and morphological data. The family Sabiaceae comprises three genera: Meliosma, Ophiocaryon and Sabia, the first by far the largest with over one hundred species. The family's New World distribution goes from central Mexico to Brazil, Peru and Bolivia, while in the Old World it can be found in Southeast Asia, southern India and the Malay Archipelago. The most recent monographic treatment of Meliosma was done in 1971, but subgen. Meliosma sect. Lorenzanea, which includes New World taxa, was not included. As for molecular work, a number of broad scale studies have included samples of different genera within the family, but at present there has not been any phylogenetic work focusing exclusively on Sabiaceae. Previous studies that included few taxa of Sabiaceae have placed the family among basal eudicots. Proposed research includes phylogenetic work at two taxonomic levels: (1) genus level to test the monophyly of the family and the three genera, and (2) a species level phylogeny of subgen. Meliosma sect. Lorenzanea. Also, morphological and anatomical techniques will be used to search for synapomorphies in Meliosma, initially focusing on fruit endocarp and leaf petioles. Preliminary molecular data from one locus (rbcL) suggests that Neotropical Meliosma are paraphyletic, with one of these groups forming a clade with Asian Meliosma. Furthermore, Meliosma and Sabia are supported as sister clades. Broader Impacts:
