Genetics Section Miles, Nicholas W. [1], Soltis, Douglas E. [2], Soltis, Pamela S. [3]. Phylogenetic Diversification of Homeobox Genes. Homeobox genes are a large family of homeodomain transcription factors known to be involved in many facets of development in plants, animals, and fungi. In plants, homeobox genes are involved in floral and infloresence development, leaf polarity, embryogenesis, meristem maintenance, pollen maturation, and response to environmental conditions. Their occurrence in the genomes of plants has shown a large expansion as the level of organismal complexity has increased during evolution. However, phylogenetic analyses of protein sequences to date have not resolved the relationships among classes of homeobox genes with certainty. Here we try to better resolve the evolutionary events leading to this large family by (1) incorporating sequences from phylogenetically important taxa (Welwitschi, Amborella, Nuphar, Persea, Acorus, and Eschscholzia), and (2) analyzing both DNA and amino acid sequences.
