Systematics Section Lyon, Stephanie [1], Givnish, Thomas J. [2], Clements, Mark [3]. Molecular systematics of Corybas (Orchidaceae). The Corybas alliance is a group of terrestrial orchids consisting of approximately 140 recognized species. Corybas ranges from Himalayan India and China through Southeast Asia to New Guinea, Australia, and New Zealand, with a handful of species scattered on smaller Pacific islands. The group exhibits a distinctive and highly specialized floral morphology that is probably related to pollination by deceived fungus gnats seeking oviposition sites. Preliminary studies of nuclear ribosomal ITS sequences by Clements et. al. (2002, 2007) supported the monophyly of the Corybas alliance and identified eight subgroups subsequently described as separate genera. The present study includes an expanded set of taxa from a broader geographical range, and incorporates additional sequence data from the chloroplast and nuclear genomes. We use this data set to test the monophyly of the eight described genera in the Corybas alliance, to test for congruence between the chloroplast and nuclear genomes, and to examine phylogenetic patterns in floral morphology.
