Systematics Section Wen, Jun [1], Nie, Zelong [2], Manchester, Steven R. [3]. Phylogenetic analysis of Ampelopsis and its close relatives (Vitaceae). Ampelopsis is a genus of the grape family with about 25 species from northern hemisphere primarily distributed in eastern Asia and eastern North America. Our molecular analyses using sequences of three plastid (trnL-F, rps16, and atpB-rbcL) and one nuclear (GAI1) fragments suggest that Ampelopsis is paraphyletic, with Rhoicissus from Africa, the Cissus striata complex from South America and the Australian Clematicissus forming a clade nested within Ampelopsis. The African Rhoicissus is sister to a clade including the South American Cissus striata complex and the Australian Clematicissus. The northern hemisphere Ampelopsis species fall into two independent Asian – North American disjunct lineages. Relaxed molecular dating based on multiple fossils suggested that the intercontinental disjuncts are much younger than the breakup of the three Gondwanan continents. The southern hemisphere lineages originated from northern hemisphere groups. The northern hemisphere Ampelopsis is best segregated into two genera. Broader Impacts:
