Morpho-molecular differentiation within taxonomical complex Section Pseudobaccatae (subgenus Ephedra ) of Western Himalaya.

The taxonomical features/grouping of Ephedra intermedia Section Pseudobaccatae Tribe Pseudobaccatae and E. regeliana Section Pseudobaccatae Tribe Leptocldae is highly complex due to the some overlapping vegetative character states. Most of the taxonomical categories of the range were made without counting and specifying the evolution within a particular range of existence with time and space. The present study give an insight on the taxonomical structure regarding the interpopulational differentiation of the polymorphic Section Pseudobaccateae including Tribe Pseudobaccatae and Leptocldae by analyzing major conserved morphological and AFLP based molecular characters of the two most common species of the range ( E. intermedia Schernk & Meyer and E. regeliana Stapf). The intersectional and species specific relationship within the genus Ephedra were examined using conserved morphological character states by applying SPSS analysis alongwith AFLP data with basic descriptive genetic statics. Both the conserved morphological character states and AFLP based analysis supported infraspecific variations in populations in E. intermedia Schrenk & Meyer and E. regeliana Stapf ex Florin in the Western Himalayan range and established some new taxa at the species level in respect of co-relation or match to the earlier described taxa in the existing Western Himalayan range. The study also highlights evolutionary pattern followed by vegetative and reproductive characters. The morpho – molecular character states of the examined genus was clearly reflected in the sectional boundaries between the subsections and at the species level, within the subsections . Strong indications were found for the current status at the infrageneric level of the populations through AFLP based evidence.
