Phylogenetic relationships of Argythamnia sensu lato (Euphorbiaceae) .

The genus Argythamnia sensu lato (Euphorbiaceae) contains approximately 90 species distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Historically there has been much debate concerning the circumscription of the genus. According to the most-recent classifications of the Euphorbiaceae, the genera Argythamnia, Chiropetalum, and Ditaxis, together with Caperonia and Philyra comprise the subtribe Ditaxinae (tribe Chrozophorae, subfamily Acalyphoideae). However, many taxonomists recognize Chiropetalum and Ditaxis as subgenera of Argythamnia, instead of distinct genera. The present project tests the phylogenetic relationships of these three taxa based on nuclear ITS and chloroplast trn L-F sequence data analyzed by maximum parsimony. The outgroup consists of four species from the genera Adelia (tribe Adeliae, subfamily Acalyphoideae), Caperonia and Philyra. The ingroup comprises a broad sample of 35 species from throughout the range of the genus and contains multiple species from all three subgenera. Preliminary results strongly support the monophyly of an assemblage containing Argythamnia, Chiropetalum, and Ditaxis. Despite a peculiar disjunct distribution between the mountains of Mexico and Andes of South America, Chiropetalum is also strongly supported to be monophyletic and forms a clade that is sister to Argythamnia and Ditaxis. Whereas Argythamnia is also inferred to be monophyletic, it is nested within Ditaxis. These results support the recognition of the Argythamnia in a broad sense, which the inclusion of Chiropetalum and Ditaxis.
