Colloquia: SERNEC: Four years of development of a herbarium Research Coordination Network

Brown, Herrick H. K. [1], Nelson, John B. [2].

Status and Update of the South Carolina Consortium of Herbaria.

The Consortium of South Carolina Herbaria (COSCH) consists of 8 member herbaria (CHARL, CITA, CLEMS, CONV, NBYC, USCH, USCS, Winthrop) whose collections total approximately 300,000 specimens. Currently five member herbaria have a web presence (CLEMS, NBYC, USCH, USCS, Winthrop). In an effort to increase the exposure to these sites and raise awareness for other herbaria within the state, the COSCH web site (www.sc-herbaria.org) was established under the SERNEC/SHC portal and includes links to member web sites and the online collections databases of four member herbaria (CLEMS, USCH, USCS, Winthrop). Active database efforts include those of CHARL, CLEMS, and USCH with the anticipated addition of CONV and NBYC by the end of 2010. Collections management software includes Specify 5 and 6, as well as custom designed databases. Current efforts at USCH to capitalize on the network-ability of Specify 6 have created a framework that facilitates the inclusion of other member herbaria. By minimizing the need for software and IT resources, contributing members can begin actively entering their collections data in less than 20 minutes 'start-up' time. Further, this design has been extended to the COSCH instance of the GBIF IPT wherein each contributing member's data will be listed as a separate resource. Future digital initiatives will involve barcoding and imaging of specimens.
