History of Botany in the Rhode Island Area Stevenson, Dennis Wm. [1]. 200 Years of Rhode Island Botany. Botany has been a fundamental component of human endeavors in the area now called Rhode Island since the arrival of the first human population. In this talk, I will concentrate on the history of botany in the universities in Rhode Island. Thus, the time line begins in 1811 at Brown University when botany was introduced into the curriculum of the medical school as Materia Medica nearly fifty years after the founding of Brown University in 1764. Botany has been and continues to be a component of the biology curricula of extant universities in Rhode Island. Botanists have played a prominent role not just as leaders in their disciplines, which range across the spectrum, but also in the growth and development of, for example, the University of Rhode Island and Providence College.
