Characteristics of Pteridophyte flora of Jeju Island, Korea with emphasis on the endangered ferns.

Jeju Island located off the southernmost point of the Republic of Korea, there are placed on the World Natural Heritage Site registered as the Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes. This study was conducted to establish a list of Jeju pteridophyte species through investigation of the status of doubtful taxa included in previous studies and the geographical distribution of each taxa. It used 6,096 specimens collected throughout Jeju Island. As a result, it has been determined that 163 taxa occur on the island, and they belong to 28 families, 59 genera, 159 species, and 4 varieties. 15 families, 21 genera, and 32 species out of previously recorded taxa were not identified in this survey, they have been listed as doubtful taxa. Among them, Mankyua chejuense B.-Y. Sun et al. and Isoetes sinensis Palmer were classified as the category of Critically Endangered at global level, and 2 taxa in Extinct in the region, 8 taxa of Critically Endangered, 18 taxa of in Endangered at regional level by quantitative evaluation and classification based on IUCN red list categories and criteria at both regional and global levels. And, it has been determined that climatic features have a significant influence on the distribution of pteridophyte flora in Jeju Island.
