Industrial paint effluent implications on the common weed Tridax procumbens.An Ecotoxicological review.
Ecotoxicological indexes based on the inhibition rate (IC) of seed germination, biomass (fresh and dry weight), leaf length, leaf breadth and area, plant height, peduncle length; number of flowers produced; chlorophyll and heavy metals content were determined on Tridax procumbens treated with industrial paint effluent. The appearance, TSS, TDS, COD and BOD of the effluent were also determined. The plants were raised at different concentrations of the paint effluent and in tap water control for five weeks. The results of the plant analysis indicated that the effluent had significant (P< 0.05) effect on seed germination and other growth parameters 0 when compared with then tap water control. The value of the results for all parameters observed deceased with increase in concentration of the effluent. Survival/ toxic threshold level of the plant was 40% concentration of the effluent. However, the levels of accumulation of Cadmium and Lead in the plants were found to increase with increase in concentration of the effluent. However, the cobalt level was found to decrease with increase in the concentration of the effluent. These values observed were however not significant enough to recommend the plant as a phytoremediating agent for the heavy metals present in the paint effluent.
