Biogeography

Rando, Juliana Gastaldello [1], Pirani, José R. [1].

Patterns of geographic distribution of the species of Chamaecrista sect. Chamaecrista ser. Coriaceae (Benth.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby.

An analysis of the geographic distribution of the 27 taxa of the series was prepared based on maps depicting the known occurrences of the taxa. These include: Chamaecrista. anceps, Ch. aristata, Ch. burchellii, Ch. cardiostegia, Ch. caribaea var. caribaea, Ch. caribaea var. inaguensis, Ch. caribaea var. lucayana, Ch. choriophylla var. choriophylla, Ch. choriophylla var. latifolia, Ch. choriophylla var. rossicorum, Ch. cinerascens, Ch. distichoclada, Ch. lagotois, Ch. mucronata, Ch. multinervea, Ch. olesiphylla, Ch. papillata, Ch. potentilla, Ch. rotundata var. rotundata, Ch. rotundata var. grandistipula, Ch. rotundata var. interstes, Ch. roraimae, Ch. simplifacta, Ch. tragacanthoides var. tragacanthoides, Ch. tragacanthoides var. rasa, Ch. ulmea and Ch. venulosa. One species occurs in the Caribbean region, all the others are distributed in a main center of diversity, the Espinhaço Range - Brazil, with two fundamental patterns: a continuous to disjunct occurrence through the Espinhaço and adjacent or disjunct areas, and the pattern of endemism to the southern region of that mountain. Among the disjunctions, threes species, are notheworthy: one present in the Espinhaço and elevations of the “Arco de Brasília”, Goiás state, other in the Espinhaço and in Espírito Santo state, and a third one centered in the Espinhaço and in the Guyana Shield. The distribution patterns illustrated are discussed, mainly as compared to data from other groups and to previous analyses of five species belonging in Ch. ser. Coriaceae.
