Anatomy of the genus Bomarea (Alstroemeriaceae), an important source of phylogenetic characters.

The genus Bomarea (Alstroemeriaceae) is a diverse taxon (110-120 species), distributed through neotropics, found mainly in highland areas. This taxon has traditionally been divided into three subgenera, which were not recovered in a recently published molecular phylogenetic analysis. In order to explore and characterize possible anatomical differences between taxa members of proposed clades for the genus, cut stems were made for a large group of species belonging to different clades, including both habit species erect and lianescent. The tissues were stained with toluidine blue and the descriptions and characterizations were made using light microscopy. The study describes the composition and arrangement of the different stem tissues, with emphasis on the description of the anatomic features that account for the construction of the growth habit of each taxon. The stems of all species are atactostelics, with a layer of epidemic cells and closed collateral bundles. The species of erect habit developed sclerenchyma walls thicker than those of lianescent habit, and the vascular bundles embedded within the band of sclerenchyma while in the lianescent species are only partially included. There was a dense central mass of vascular bundles in a radial arranged, exclusive for B. torta. The stem anatomy in Bomarea, proves to be an important source of information for understanding the evolution and ecology of the genus.
