Plant diversity and dispersal syndromes in three gallery forests of the Colombian Eastern Plains.

The Colombian Eastern Plains Ecoregion comprises natural savannas and riverine forests that extend along 15 million hectares. Almost all species of the Ecoregion are found along its gallery forests. Between March and July 2009, we established the first three one-hectare permanent plots in non-flooding gallery forests adjacent to non-flooding natural savannas (Reserve Tomo Grande, Municipality of Santa Rosalia, Vichada Department). Individuals (trees, vines and hemiepiphytes) with diameter breast height (DBH) greater than or equal to 10 cm were included. The structure of vegetation was analized through the Fisher's alpha diversity index and physiognomic aspects (vertical structure per plot and importance value index IVI per species). The dispersal syndrome of each species was determined based on dispersal units morphology. 120 species were found in the three hectares. As result of the low richness, a low diversity index value was obtained in comparison with Amazonian plots (α-Fisher mean = 27.0), which is related to fragmentation of the riparian forests. However, Arecaceae, Annonaceae, Rubiaceae, Moraceae, Burseraceae, Fabaceae, Chrysobalanaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Lauraceae showed high abundance values in our plots and in the Amazonian ones. Almost all species had high local IVI values, which is related to ecological differences over short distances. The greatest amount of individuals and species were endozoochorous (67% and 71.7% respectively), followed by the anemochorous ones (15.6% and 13.3% respectively). Our results confirm the importance of animals for successful recruitment of plants in gallery forests of Colombia, as concluded in other neotropical forests studies.
